Dr. Liuchen Chang of the University of New Brunswick received the R3 Award at R3 Gala 2016 on March 23rd for his pioneering work in renewable energy conversion and systems. Traditionally, energy is a top down infrastructure – from large power plants to transmission lines, distribution and use. It was never designed to flow energy in the opposite direction. Dr. Chang is the one who figured out how multiple sources of energy can move backward on the grid. Dr. Chang’s research results allow a variety of different types of energy sources to be added to the grid at varying voltages. His technology will allow for multiple small energy sources to come together as one networked power plant.
