New Brunswick Priority Occupation Student Support Fund
The purpose of the program is to help the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training, and Labour (PETL) address labour market shortages in key industries in New Brunswick by funding innovative research that leads to increased productivity or decreased labour needs. The research must be relevant to one of the priority occupations, which are deemed high demand, priority occupations by the Government of New Brunswick. This program will also help address the shortage by creating new student training opportunities and increasing the labour force in these priority areas.
Proposals will be evaluated by an external review committee based on the following criteria:
- Potential for the research to create efficiencies to the priority area(s)
- The relevance of the research project to at least one of the listed Priority Occupation areas
- Strength of the knowledge translation plan
- Capacity to execute the project
- The involvement of the non-academic partner in the chosen Priority Occupation area(s)
- Experiential learning and training opportunities for the students involved
Projects must begin no later than March 1, 2021, with a duration of no longer than 18 months. Moreover, expenses may be backdated to July 1, 2020, to accommodate the short timeframe.
Applicants will need to demonstrate in their applications how they expect to drive efficiency or reduce labour needs in New Brunswick for the given Priority Area. Applicants must involve a relevant, non-academic partner in the chosen priority area (the partner does not need to financially contribute to the project but should be involved in implementing the results).
Eligible expenses include student stipends of $6,000 per undergraduate, and $12,000 per graduate, as well as knowledge translation costs of up to $5,000 per application. A maximum of up to $75,000 may be requested in each application. Applicants may submit more than one application, so long as the research project described in each application is different. Projects that have already received funding through the Research Assistantship Initiative (RAI) are not eligible. However, if the applicant is successful in receiving funds from the NBPOSS Fund, they may apply to other NBIF programs as a continuation of the project.
