From University to Startup Stage

Some of the most interesting startups begin with a simple observation that something important is being missed.

For the team behind Mulli Swing Solutions, that realization happened while they were still engineering students at the University of New Brunswick.

As they explored the growing world of golf training technology, one question kept surfacing. With so many advanced tools available to measure swing mechanics, ball flight, and club speed, why was almost nothing measuring what happens with the golfer’s hands on the club?

That question ultimately led to the creation of Mulli Swing Solutions, a startup focused on bringing grip measurement and feedback into the modern golf training ecosystem.

Now, the team will take the stage as one of five finalists at breakthru Live on Thursday, March 19, pitching their company in front of investors and a live audience.

The Problem They’re Obsessed With Solving

When the team first began developing their product as part of an undergraduate engineering project, grip measurement was actually on their original feature list, but it was quickly crossed off.

It seemed too complex.

But when they started speaking with local golf coaches, something unexpected happened.

Without prompting, the first thing many coaches asked for in a training tool was grip measurement and grip feedback.

That was the moment the team realized they had uncovered a real gap in the market.

Despite the explosion of modern golf training technology, very few tools provide insight into the connection between a golfer’s hands and the club, a critical component of performance.

The Moment It Started Feeling Real

Early validation came at the 2023 UNB Engineering Design Symposium, where the project received strong recognition.

But the bigger shift came afterward.

Mentors, founders, and members of New Brunswick’s startup ecosystem began encouraging the team to think bigger. What started as a student project began to look like a real company.

That support helped the founders realize their idea had the potential to move beyond the classroom and into the global golf training market.

Building a startup is challenging under any circumstances. Doing it while completing engineering degrees adds another level of complexity.

At one point, the founders were spread across multiple cities, and even different time zones, while continuing to develop the company.

Balancing coursework, jobs, and the demands of a hardware startup was not easy.

What made it possible, they say, was the strength of their team and the trust they had built with each other over the years.

Many existing solutions for measuring grip are either lab-based systems or require golfers to purchase entirely new “smart” clubs.

Mulli Swing Solutions is taking a different approach.

The team is developing a retrofit smart grip that can be installed on a golfer’s existing club, allowing players to train using equipment they already know and trust while gaining new insights into their grip performance.

Why They’re Building in New Brunswick

All four founders are proud New Brunswickers, with roots in Moncton, St. Andrews, and Rothesay.

They say building the company in the province has been an advantage.

“New Brunswick’s startup ecosystem offers access to mentors, founders, and support programs that help early-stage companies grow. Seeing other companies succeed locally has also helped reinforce the belief that building a high-impact company from the region is possible,” explained Brycen Munroe, Co-Founder and COO of Mulli Swing Solutions.

The team hopes to become one of the next success stories.

A Startup That Started in Residence

The company’s origin story goes back even further than their engineering project.

The founders first met in first-year residence at UNB in Neville Jones House. After beginning their engineering studies together, they eventually split into different disciplines before reconnecting during their final-year capstone project.

That shared history, they say, has been one of their biggest advantages.

Their connection extends beyond the company itself, it’s something that has helped them navigate both the highs and the challenges of building a startup.
